If you ballast deep and wide (a 6" by 6" trench full) you'll use 20 lb/ft of track. Crushed rock is usually sold by the yard, 27 cubic feet to a yard. At 20 lb/ft, you'll need about a yard of rock to ballast 100 feet of track. In well drained soil, you don't need nearly as much, but it still adds up.
